Assessment and Treatment

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that affects both adults and children and can have significant effects on a person’s ability to cope with daily life; but with the right treatment the person can enjoy a fulfilling life without their symptoms having a lasting impact on their life. But before we can treat the symptoms, we must first determine whether you have ADHD.

We will arrange a day and time for a video consultation with you using virtual technology, and this will be arranged to suit your availability. As the assessment process is very important, and needs to include as much information as possible, this can involve lengthy consultations and will start with an initial consultation. You may wish to have someone with you who knows you very well to add to the information. The assessment may conclude that you do not have ADHD, and this will be communicated to you along with advice as to whether there are other possible conditions and information on where to get this confirmed. The assessment process will also include us contacting your GP to ascertain whether there are any ongoing complications that may affect treatment or alternative reasons for your symptoms. We aim to work closely with your GP and the outcome of the assessment will be shared with them.

Treatment usually involves prescribing medication that reduce the symptoms of ADHD. There are several different types of medication, and the assessment process will determine which one is most likely to suit your needs. South Holloway Adult ADHD Group will issue monthly private prescriptions, which can be taken to your local chemist. We will also liaise with your GP and if your GP is happy to continue with the issuing of prescriptions ask them to take this over. We will offer regular reviews of your progress, and this will include some physical observations (blood pressure, pulse rate and weight) so we can exclude any adverse effects from the medication. You may need several changes in either dose or type of ADHD before you are settled on the ideal treatment regime.

South Holloway Adult ADHD Group can also offer information on psychological ways of managing your ADHD symptoms, allowing you to have greater control alongside the medication.

Living with and managing ADHD is difficult and involves specialist assessment and treatment. South Holloway Adult ADHD Group are here to help you through this journey and to improve your life.
